ABOUT THE FACULTY

Location

The University of Plovdiv "Paisii Hilendarski" is located in Plovdiv, which is the second largest city in Bulgaria and the largest administrative, economic, cultural and scientific center in Southern Bulgaria. The city was founded in the 2nd millennium BC as a Thracian settlement, and has a centuries-old cultural and archaeological heritage. Much older than Athens or Rome, Plovdiv treasures its architectural artifacts located in its Old Town. The unique Renaissance atmosphere of Old Plovdiv charms visitors to the city, and the three hills on which this part of the city is situated have their own special charisma.

Plovdiv University, named in honor of the Bulgarian historian Paisiy Hilendarski, is the city's leading cultural and scientific institution. It is the largest institution of higher education in Southern Bulgaria, and the second largest Bulgarian university, after "St. Kliment Ohridski" Sofia University. In 2001 the university celebrated its fortieth anniversary.

Today the University of Plovdiv is a true UNIVERSITY by international standards, since it provides training to students in the four major fields of higher education: natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, and economics. It has been institutionally accredited by Decision No 1 of 15 Feb 2001 by the National Certification and Accreditation Board.

The Rectorate, or the Main Building of the University is located in the building of the former "St. Augustin" French College for Boys in the city center, 24 Tsar Asen St. It hosts the faculties of Physics, Chemistry, Languages and Literature, Economic and Social Sciences, and Law. The Faculty of Biology is located in its own building in the Old Town, just above the Roman Amphitheater.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics and the Faculty of Education occupy the eastern and western wings of the new modern building of the university. It is located in the southwestern part of the city close to the English Language School, Russian Language School and the District Hospital. The building is located amidst green vegetation and tennis courts. There are a lot of friendly coffee bars, a large canteen for students and staff, academic bookshop, medical office, photocopying center, etc. Among the Faculty's facilities is the academic library, which maintains growing specialized collections in the fields of Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as seven computer rooms, an Internet self-access room, up-to-date lecture halls, seminar rooms and a smart auditorium.
